Waterfalls on the Road to Hana: Upper Waikuni Falls (AKA “The Three Bears”)

Upper Waikuni Falls (AKA “The Three Bears”)

The Road to Hana is known as one of the most beautiful scenic drives on Maui, and it features many photogenic stops along our luxury Road to Hana Tour. The rich, lush foliage contrasts with the brilliant blue ocean, punctuated by gagged black lava formations. Along the way, there are many spectacular waterfalls to view and photograph. One of the most popular is Upper Waikuni Falls (AKA “The Three Bears”)

Please do not park at the bridge itself. A little further up the way is a small parking area on the left side of the road. We suggest you park there and make the short walk down to bridge to ensure no conflict of traffic caused by parking right at the bridge, which is located on a very narrow area of the Highway. Magnificent photos can be taken from the bridge. The hike down to base of falls is challenging, there was a small landslide in 2012, and there are small boulders and some steep drops so we suggest enjoying the view from the bridge.

Red Torch Ginger grows in abundance here, offering an unique botanical photo opportunity. Plants may grow as high as 20 feet in height, and feature large, brilliant red blooms whose petals are often outlined in white. The essential oils of Red Torch Ginger are used as natural flavor and scent additives and in traditional and alternative medicines due to the plant’s antioxidant properties.
