In the late 1970’s, Ho’okipa Beach Park in Paia developed a reputation as the “Windsurfing Capital of the World”. Located at Mile #9 on the Road to Hana, the gorgeous white sand beach at Ho’okipa ("hospitality”) offers the best windsurfing conditions in the world. Windsurf enthusiasts from around the world are drawn to this beach to test their windsurfing skills on some of the best waves on the North Maui coastline. Ho’okipa Beach is a magnet for sunbathers, people-watchers, artists, pro windsurfers and kite surfers from all over the world during the winter peak travel season. Surfing competitions like The Aloha Classic and Red Bull come to Ho’okipa, and the Maui Sports Foundation sponsors a number of events each year.
An overlook offers great views of surfers, and if you are lucky, you may even spot sea turtles resting on the warm sands of this incredible Maui beach. Ho’okipa Beach is a favorite turtle resting ground, and Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (Honu) show up here to rest and sunbathe most afternoons and evenings. A local volunteer conservation group patrols, sets up barricades in order to prevent any harassment of the protected turtles, and they are happy to answer any questions about these unique sea creatures.
