Lanikai Farms offers a unique aquaculture educational system where visitors can learn the basic ecological principles of growing edible fish and plants, the importance of worms, bees and microorganisms to healthy, truly sustainable agriculture, and methods to effectively manage insects without dangerous pesticides and herbicides. Lanikai Farms’ state-of-the-art facility is open to school field trips (grades 5-12). Students learn about the basics of fish farming for sustainable agriculture in small or large spaces.
Lanikai Farms adjoins Fragrant Orchids of Maui, a commercial nursery that is open to public visits to learn about orchids. Living in tree canopies above earth's floor, orchids adapted to breathe air through their roots, without requiring soil to provide water and nutrients.
Lloyd Fischel, who the State of Hawaii honored as a Hero of Agriculture for Education (2010), designed a biological filtration and rainwater runoff structure which provides a healthy and efficient environment for raising fish. Lanikai Farms believes that traditional Hawaiian respect for a'ina, the earth, is a key value fundamental to the spirit of aloha, and such respect is vital to a healthy civilization.
